A Quick Guide To Underpinning Basements

Posted on: 10 July 2017

If you would like to get more use out of your basement, you may need to make it deeper. In these cases, a procedure called underpinning is used. Underpinning is a method that increases the depth of a property's foundations, therefore giving more height in the room and more scope when it comes to using it for living space. There are a number of different methods on offer when it comes to underpinning a basement. In this article, we'll take a look at the various methods used and which you might choose for your own property.

Mass Pouring Underpinning

There are many ways to complete underpinning, but the most commonly used method is called mass pouring. This is particularly well suited to underpinning jobs where little digging and a more shallow foundation is required. During the process the weak soil under the surface is excavated and concrete is poured into the space to help strengthen the base of the new foundations. Concrete is much stronger than the soil and therefore provides the perfect support for the property above.

Beam And Base Method

The beam and base method of underpinning uses a traditional base made of concrete, but also uses beams that will support the existing foundation. A concrete beam is constructed in place of, below or above the existing foundation. How these beams are constructed will largely depend on the property built on the foundation and the nature of the load applied to the foundation.

Pile Method

The pile method of underpinning requires piles to be driven along both sides of a wall at equal distance. These piles are then connected using steel or concrete needles that go through the walls. If your home is built onto clay soil or situated in a waterlogged area, this is one of the most effective types of underpinning available. The pile technique is also used to support the load of the existing foundation.

The Right Underpinning Company

Whichever method of basement underpinning you opt for, it is highly important that you choose a company that has years of experience and is competent in carrying out underpinning to the highest possible standard. There are many companies offering underpinning services, so it pays to shop around for the best service and offers. Extending your basement will help you to use the space to its full potential. With higher ceilings you can use your basement for practically any purpose and also increase the value of your property in the process.

How Contractors Helped my Commercial Business

Hello, my name is Craig and I own a large commercial business which is located in Brisbane, Australia. When I purchased my current premises, my company was quite small. However, as my sales improved and I began to buy more stock, I suddenly found that I didn't have room to store it or display it in my small shop. I started to look for new premises but the cost of moving would be very high. Thankfully, my friend suggested I build an extension. I contacted a team of contractors. They constructed a great extension and my business is now doing really well.
